A palladium complex used as a homogeneous catalyst for the carbonylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Ab initio calculations have been performed to establish the mechanism by which the carbonyl group is inserted into the unsaturated bond and the effect that ligands have in controlling the catalytic behaviour of the complex.
